Day #3: Yesterday in Bar Harbor, Maine... Today arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia!
This is my second day to sit on the balcony and write as we we re pulling into our next port. I could get used to this!!! If I could just figure out a way to do this full time!!!!
We thoroughly enjoyed Bar Harbor, Maine. It's one of those places that, apart from a cruise, I'd probably never have the opportunity to visit. Bar Harbor is where the Vanderbilt's and others uber-wealthy built their summer homes. Many of the homes and luxury hotels were destroyed in a fire. The story of the oppulant lifestyle and of the fire are fascinating. And the homes that remain are absolutely beautiful.
The town of Bar Harbor is really charming with lots and lots of unique shops and restaurants. You could easily make a day of it there in the town where the local specialty is a "Lobster Roll". A Lobster Roll is a hotdog bun - grilled on both sides - filled with fresh lobster and drizzled with hot drawn butter. The best $12.95 meal I've ever had!
After lunch we opted for the $15.00 Trolly ride to the top of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park. I sure didn't realize the highest point in the Eastern quadrant of the US was in Bar Harbor, Maine! As a matter of fact - you have to go to Brazil to find a higher mountain! From the top you can see all of Bar Harbor. Beautiful picture spot.
I have to admit that I'm spoiled from being on so many Smitty-Cruises. It's taken 2 days and the elbowing of my children to remind me that I don't know everyone on the cruise and that we are not all here for the same reason! On the Smitty Cruises - it's so wonderful to all be here as one big family. It's so awesome to know that, even though you might not know someone by name yet - you have a common bond.
One of the cool things about this itinerary is that we aren't one of 4 or 5 ships decending on a town all at once. We were the only ship in port yesterday and, as we pull into Halifax today, it appears that is the case here, too. I couldn't help but think, yesterday, how cool it will be when a ship full of us land in a port together!
I wish you could see what I am seeing and hearing right now! As the ship is docking here in Halifax - we are being greeted by a bagpiper and dummer. I think it's going to be a good day!
More later. Miss you all!
