An Article That Caught My Eye
One of the best ways we can SERVE is to be unencumbered.
Debt can shackle a person so that giving loses its joy and becomes a burden
instead of the privilege it was intended to be.
I know a lot of you
already know and follow Dave Ramsey. If you don’t know of him and his teaching
– I’d encourage you to get familiar with him. His teaching has helped and
blessed so many.
The following article on Christmas spending caught my
eye and I thought I’d pass it on to you.

Joyful detachment - 2009-11-13
Several years ago Food for the Poor sent us a Christmas catalog. The gifts were things like a goat, chickens, "dig a well"; you could even 'build' a house for less than many spend on a tool shed (a nice one). The gifts were given to the poorest of the poor in honor of that person you are "gifting". Since so many of us are truly encumbered with "stuff" (I agree!!)..it was the most joy-filled gift giving! My 5 children have been so much happier and motivated to GIVE when they know how much other people are suffering and need help. We still give other gifts, but that puts so much more perspective and SANITY into the way we spend. It does help us appreciate the gift of each others' PRESENCE,too. Giving to the poor, on Jesus' birthday, you really know you are giving a gift to Him. . And He gives back soooo much more!! Thanks for sharing this topic. Great food for thought. Makes me think of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and of those clutter-free shepherds who made it to Jesus' first birthday party!! Lord, help me DETACH!!!!!!!

Age is good - 2009-11-06
Last year day after Christmas we had a fire. We lost everything including my shadowbox of Smitty's signed Halleluiah cover...! Ahem, but in seriousness.. God's points resonated very distinctly, wow did we have a year..! One will after the other, but I'm thankful giving Him the glory everyday. One major point was LESS IS MORE, the SIMPLE is more. Stay out of the stores! and stay out of hype and come down. Excess is just "chasing materialism." The less you have, the less clutter, be it physical or mental and both! What a way to be cleansed. Everything that I THOUGHT had attatchment was gone. My 2 girls and husband and me lived to be a testimony and further His Kingdom. ..Biblically fire has good and destructive purpose. The Lord has His purpose and it just wasn't about"stuff." (Reminded od George Carlin's '70's comic routine on stuff.) . It was all about Him. Him first, and living the Word,DOERS of The Word! James 1:22 Prayers for Ramsey and his outreach...praying God will open doors...Amen! MaryLou

Try a gift exchange! - 2009-11-05
We have 7 people (7 adults) in my family and 4 years ago we tried a Secret Santa deal where we spent a specified amount and got ONE gift on Christmas Day (or Christmas Eve) and a few little gifts during the month of December. It has been an amazing time because now we don't go broke and have to use cards and we also spend time with family rather than opening gifts. :)

THANKS! - 2009-11-04
I don't use credit during the Holidays, but do have a tendancy to go overboard. Dave Ramsey "spoke" to me, and I'll pray that God will reign in my spending. That article was heaven sent.

Ramsey Rocks - 2009-11-04
Ramsey is the key to this nation's survival out of the "me-stuff" era we've just gone through. Hopefully, his message will reach everyone and what the gov't does or doesn't do won't really matter. Thanks for the post.

oh yeah! - 2009-11-04
Ramsey is one of the best financial guys out there! As he always says, "It's knowledge your Grandmother would tell you." He cares for his listeners and is not afraid to tell you it straight. I love him!

Our family has been listening to DR for years. Great insight and wisdom from one who could have saved many from the pain of the last 18 months.
