A Lesson FINALLY Learned...
The below is a blog that originally displayed in FRIENDS ONLINE as an exclusive blog. It is written by: Derek; MichaelWSmith.com's administrator; He is the father of a 3 year-old, and husband to his wife, Kate.
=======================================================
So, for a while now I've been leading a very idealistic life as a father. I've got a pretty amazing little girl, a beautiful wife (mother to my little girl).
But last night something happened that I didn't think would happen for a few more years. Last night as Kennedy was going to bed she told her mom that she wanted to go to bed in Mommy and Daddy's bed. When her mom resisted Kendy told her that "Daddy said (she) could." Which is INTERESTING, because I didn't tell her any such thing. I kind of looked beyond it and laughed.
Then tonight it happened again only this time apparently "Daddy told (her) that (she) could watch High School Musical 3". This answer was only after her Mommy had told her "no, that it was almost time to go to bed."
Again, tonight though I put the two and two together. My little girl had passed yet another milestone. She has the ability to willingly sin. I know, I know - I'm not jumping off a bridge because Kendy is suddenly a "bad kid." But I am shocked to see our human nature exposed at 3 years and 3 months. It's just so interesting to see how something that has certainly never been taught to her has been learned simply by living.
Most importantly though I learned a lesson about being a "Father". And truly a perspective of God's love for us as his children. I don't love Kendy any less for her making up a story, if anything I feel the need to spend even more time with her, teaching her right from wrong, and combatting our nature for the rest of my life. God loves us the same way. We screw up (A LOT). In fact I'm probably the KING of screwing up. But that doesn't change how our Father in heaven loves us - all it does is steel his resolve to help us to learn more and do better.
For the record, Kendy got a talking to about what she did - she apologized and hugged her Mommy and Daddy, cried a little - but we're one more lesson down, one that I'll probably repeat a few hundred more times in my life.
I know nothing in this note is groundbreaking, but it really brings a couple things that some of my peers have been talking about lately - and I have a better grasp on some teaching that I've received over the last couple years from a leader John Sheasby and Smitty. It's amazing that it took Kendy doing something to drive their point home.
O.K. now if I can just figure out how to get Kendy to bed on-time... hmmm...... baby steps, baby steps. ;-)

| I remember when I was younger: my mom explained to me why it's important to do certain things like going to bed on time. Just knowing why is helpful. :) |

| I wish I knew what I know now when I was raising my daughter.. but unfortunately.. I didn't know.. and did much damage to my daughter at an early age.. When I became a Christian parent.. she thought I became an alien from outer space.. didn't know who I was anymore and really told me she thought she lost her best friend.. She still to this day does not know him.. but I know he is seeking her.. and I know my prayers for her during the years I've been a Christian have served to protect her.. I so appreciated reading your blog. You have a beautiful daughter.. and a beautiful wife.. You are just starting your journey and will have many many more blogs to come..You insight to the start of sin.. was very insightful.. and was an awakening to me.. that we are truly born to sin.. |

| hardest. - 2010-01-23 |
| Parenting is the hardest work I've ever done, and the most amazing. I've never had to teach my kids how to do anything bad. They just do it. And so do I!!! Funny how I try to teach my kids forgiveness and grace, but then I have the hardest time trying to do that myself! That is why I love my Savior so much! He keeps forgiving me and helping me! He gives me the strength to teach these children of mine. After all, they are His children. God has entrusted me with them on this earth. Daily I teach my children, and they teach me. We learn together, often times the hard way. Thankfully, Jesus is there all the time to scoop us up and make it all better!
Thanks for sharing Derek. Hugs to you and your gals! Keep fighting the good fight.
In Christ, Sarah |

| Derek,
It's so nice to see this side of you, speaking from your heart.
God is so good as He continually teaches us lessons, and even better when we finally "get it"
We all screw up,I know I certainly do, and more often than I'd like to admit. Just as Kendy apologized and cried to you, we are so blessed to have our heavenly Father to cry and shed our tears to when we mess up-and He's always forgiving as He's teaching us something new. I'm sure you will learn many more lessons through Kendy. It amazes me how God works through our kids..one day last week I gave Cadey, my 2 1/2 yr old niece some markers and told her she could draw a pic to put on the fridge...instead she drew on the fridge..and the kitchen cabinets...and floor...I lost it, found myself snapping out "Cadence Holly what are you doing?"( wonder if she thought uh-oh, she used my middle name,I'm in trouble now) lol Stunned, but she didn't cry, she came over took my hand and started singing "Jesus Loves Me" I don't know if she thought I didn't or she was trying to send me the message "chill, Auntie Trisha." That's all it took for me to change the bad attitude I was having that day!
God Bless you and Katie, you are wonderful parents and Kendy is blessed to have you.
Trish
...as for the getting her to bed on time...okay, admitting one of those "white lies" here...when our son was young I used a special "bed time clock" what Mike didn't know was I set that one an hour ahead, so he always thought he was getting away with staying up an hour later. Didn't work anymore once he realized all the other clocks said something else. :-) |
